Palm Sunday

In and around church this morning.

The corner of 5th and Market.
Inside the church.
A pretty house with a historic plaque. Don't know whose.
The old Carolina Apartments, still standing after all these years. The stories it could tell!

art classes

I am in the middle of taking two six week art classes at the museum. On Tuesday afternoon it is painting/drawing with pastels. On Friday mornings, oil painting.
I love making these picmonkey collages, so I had to make one of the teachers at work.

#11: Elena

Elena's car license plate reads "GLASLDY" so you know how much she enjoys her unique art. Here she is in her studio where she works on mosaics and smaller pieces. She has another studio at home that has the large equipment needed to make her amazing glass pieces that she brings in. Not only does she do complicated things with hot, colorful glass, she is excellent at figure drawing. Most important, she is a terrific human being, always upbeat, and supporting and encouraging others.

#10: Janet

On that hot summer day when I visited the ArtWorks for the first time, I met Janet. We struck up a conversation and found that we had many things in common. Janet is passionate about art, and I think she is happiest when she is in her studio listening to music and creating one of her beautiful oil paintings. Many times I have heard her say, "I just want to paint." See the Shrimp Boats hanging behind her? It was on the cover of a local magazine last month. She does a great job balancing her family and community roles with studio/painting time and accomplishes much. She has helped and inspired me.

bath redo

For the past year, I have wanted to have my hall bathroom renovated. This week the job began. Life being what it is, nothing has gone all that smoothly, so I am looking at sometime next week for the completion of the new look. I decided to keep the tub, but the floor, toilet, vanity, etc. are getting replaced. For me, making choices for decorating this small space hasn't come easily. I think it goes back to a time many years ago when everything I had chosen for a new bathroom, wallpaper included, was absolutely hideous looking when all was done. I don't want that to happen again! I am sticking with basic looks this time, and taking my chances with the poppy red and awesome orange shower curtain. That is one thing that can be easily changed. I will be so glad when it is over, when it is both pretty and usable.

I spy...

When I got home from my busyness of the day, I sat on my back porch to enjoy the first summer-like weather of the year. The house borders some sort of protected wetland, but it is not a pretty view, just lots of tall pines, cypress knees, undergrowth, and a glimmering low pool of brackish water. Squirrels have plenty of branches to play on, and various unsighted birds sing high above. Today, in the distance through the trees, we spotted a moving band of white that was almost camouflaged by the reflections made by the setting sun. After more watching I identified a great egret slowly wading through the marsh, but to make sure, I got my camera and zoomed in. Wow! Does it make its home there? Was it looking for a nesting place? Or foraging for food? I loved seeing it.

new class

Pastels. Aren't they pretty?
The pic on the left is part of the teacher's collection. The one on the right is a large set of pastels that belonged to the student's mother and are fifty years old and still usable.
These classes - I am also taking an oil painting class this six weeks - are teaching me a lot. Maybe with all the information being pumped into my head, I will settle on the medium I like the best.
