The pic on the left is part of the teacher's collection. The one on the right is a large set of pastels that belonged to the student's mother and are fifty years old and still usable.
These classes - I am also taking an oil painting class this six weeks - are teaching me a lot. Maybe with all the information being pumped into my head, I will settle on the medium I like the best.
